The Current State of AI in Legal Practice: Beyond Research and Review

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries across the board, and the legal field is no exception. From legal research and document review to contract analysis and predictive analytics, AI is being leveraged in a variety of ways to make legal work more efficient, accurate, and insightful. Let's take a look at some of the key areas where AI is making an impact in law today.

One of the most well-established applications of AI in law is in the realm of legal research. AI-powered tools like ROSS Intelligence and Casetext can sift through vast troves of case law, statutes, and secondary sources to surface the most relevant results for a given query. "AI can help lawyers find needles in haystacks and conduct legal research much more efficiently," says Andrew Arruda, CEO of ROSS Intelligence. "It's like having a highly skilled legal research assistant who never gets tired."

AI is also transforming the often tedious task of document review in discovery and due diligence contexts. Tools like Kira Systems and eBrevia use natural language processing and machine learning to automatically identify and extract key provisions from contracts and other documents. "By automating the more routine aspects of document review, AI allows attorneys to focus on higher-level analysis and strategy," notes Noory Bechor, CEO of LawGeex, another AI contract review platform.

Beyond research and review, AI is enabling more sophisticated analytics to predict outcomes in litigation, transactions, and beyond. For example, tools like Lex Machina and Ravel Law (now part of LexisNexis) analyze past court decisions and other data points to generate insights on how a judge is likely to rule in a given case. "Predictive analytics allows attorneys to make more data-driven decisions and better advise clients on potential risks and outcomes," explains Josh Becker, Chairman of Lex Machina.

AI is also being applied to streamline the creation of routine legal documents like NDAs and employment agreements. Companies like Leverton and LegalSifter provide AI-powered contract drafting tools that can generate standard documents based on a set of key terms and conditions. "By automating the first draft, AI can help attorneys save time and work more efficiently, while still allowing them to apply their judgment and expertise to refine the final product," says Leverton founder Abhinav Somani.

One innovative startup, Legalist, is even using AI for litigation finance - predicting which cases are most likely to prevail and warrant investment. "Our algorithms can analyze millions of court records to identify signals that a case is likely to be successful," explains Eva Shang, co-founder of Legalist. "It's an data-driven approach to deciding which lawsuits to fund."

As these examples illustrate, AI is already being put to use in a variety of contexts across the legal profession, from research and diligence to drafting and strategic decision-making. Of course, not everyone in the legal world is convinced that AI is ready for prime time. "AI is a powerful tool, but it's not a magic bullet," cautions Debbie Hoffman, Chief Legal Officer at cloud-based legal technology company Integreon. "Attorneys still need to exercise their professional judgment and not blindly rely on algorithms."

Nonetheless, the potential benefits of AI in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and insight are becoming increasingly clear. As the technology continues to develop and mature, we can expect to see even more innovative applications of AI across the legal landscape. The future of law looks to be increasingly AI-enabled - and attorneys who learn to harness these powerful tools will be well-positioned to thrive.
